I don’t often get to cover a product with its roots in my homeland. However, this Flightscope Mevo + review presents the perfect opportunity.

Flightscope started in the South African town of Somerset West, initially measuring the speed of projectiles. Four decades on, they manufacture golf launch monitors and simulators for professionals and amateurs.

After this Mevo Plus review, you will know what data metrics it covers and its software compatibility. Plus, I’ll reveal how much floor space you need to operate the golf simulator indoors.

Finally, I’ll detail the factors that impressed and annoyed me to help you decide whether it suits you.

Overall Rating and Thoughts

Overall, I find the Flightscope Mevo Plus golf simulator offers one of the best value-for-money options on the market. It measures a robust set of data parameters to return accurate readings to the average golfer.

Besides its affordability and impressive data metrics, the simulator gives you access to many practice tools, skills challenges, and virtual golf courses. In addition, it is built to function inside and outdoors, to enjoy the simulation experience from your garage or the driving range.

Ultimately, the Flightscope Mevo Plus offers mid and low-handicapper golfers a high-end device for a fraction of the price. When you compare it to the cost of a Trackman or GCQuad setup, you realize how much value you are receiving for the price.

If you are hunting for an accurate, entertaining, and game-improving golf simulator, the Flightscope Mevo + is a top pick. Take a closer look at its specs and videos of its performance over here. In addition, Flightscope recently launched the 2023 edition of the Mevo +, which I look forward to testing and reviewing for you in the coming months.

Features

Modes

When you start a new session on the simulator, you are met with three modes to enhance your experience inside and outdoors. The outdoor mode is designed for sessions on the driving range, where the simulator enables unlimited ball flight.

When you enjoy the luxury of a spacious garage or room, switch on Indoor mode, requiring 13 feet from the impact zone to the net. The final option is Short Indoor, where the launch monitor detects shots traveling no less than 8 feet from the mat to the impact screen.

Doppler Radar and High-Speed Image Processing Unit

A doppler radar and a high-speed image processing unit function in unison to produce accurate data measurements. The portable device measures over 16 data parameters to increase the efficiency and precision of each read.

However, if you have the budget, you can upgrade your package to track an impressive 50 metrics, covering full swing, chipping, and putting. I only tested the standard edition and felt it was sufficient for the average golfer.

Flightscope App

The Flightscope mobile application powers the simulator and is effectively your control panel. From here, you can enter multiple screens, ranging from 3D Trajectory to Dashboard, Table Screen, and Video.

3D Trajectory is a simple screen that displays your selected data parameters and ball flight in real-time. This is handy for a quick practice session or to relieve some stress. The second screen is your Dashboard, which features all the data parameters and your averages with each club.

Next, you encounter the Table Screen, which displays historical data on each data parameter for the golf clubs in your bag. At the bottom of the screen, you see the overall averages that analyze how your distance, launch, and speed have progressed since the start.

The final screen is the video section, which accesses the camera on your tablet or smartphone and records your swing. In addition, it displays the data parameters of your shot at the bottom of the screen and documents the video for you to share on social media or with your coach.

Views

Besides the diversity of modes and app sections, the Mevo Plus offers three different viewpoints when watching your ball flight. I find the back view is the best to analyze from, but that is purely a personal preference.

Your alternative options are the Perspective and Side view. Perspective shows it from a golfer’s standpoint, while side view does not offer the best sighting.

Flightscope Skills Challenges

Acquiring the Mevo Plus also gives you access to Flightscope Skills Challenges, which are fun and work to improve your game. There are a host of challenges you and your buddies can undertake. I particularly enjoyed the Complete Combine setup, where I can build personal custom games.

In the game I set up, I created 5 targets, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 yards. It covered my iron play effectively and was designed to improve my greens in regulation. This is excellent practice for an individual, and you can rope in three of your buddies to complete the foursome.

Each target has three rings around it. The black center circle is worth 5 points, the middle ring scores you 3, while the outer ring is only worth 1. Once all the challenges are complete, the player with the highest score wins.

Besides the entertainment aspect of the Skills Challenges, it also adds a layer of analytics to the fray. At the end of your challenge, it shows how many yards away from your target you are and how it compares to a PGA Tour pro.

E6 Bundle

The Flightscope Mevo Plus includes the Basic E6 Connect software subscription. This transforms your golf simulation experience and offers access to 5 virtual golf courses and 17 driving ranges.

Whenever you have a moment, loosen your swing and test your ability on the virtual golf courses. The software displays each golf swings ball flight and data parameters to see if you optimized the strike.

If you do not want to play a full round, you can head to one of the 17 virtual driving ranges. I felt it helped me practice with a purpose by providing targets and challenges to hit different shots.

Performance

Price

Flightscope released a quality golf simulator with premium features for a fraction of the price of high-end models. While it is still a hefty sum to pay for some golfers, I find it an affordable option for a simulator.

While there are more affordable options on the market, they do not offer the accuracy, insight, and entertainment of the Mevo Plus.

Data Analysis

The device measures 16 data points using the hybrid technology of a 3D doppler radar and a high-speed image processing unit. I have listed all the parameters below, but the Mevo Plus covered velocity, spin, apex, launch and landing angles, distance, and flight time.

Mevo does offer the option of upgrading to their Pro Package to deliver insight into 50 data metrics. It is not cheap, and this type of insight should not be. There is definitely value in the Pro Package if you are a low handicapper and require thorough insight into your swing mechanics.

Data Measured:

  • Ball Speed
  • Carry Distance
  • Roll Distance
  • Spin Rate
  • Spin Loft
  • Horizontal Launch Angle
  • Apex Height
  • Lateral Landing
  • Shot Shape
  • Club Head Speed
  • Total Distance
  • Smash Factor
  • Spin Axis
  • Vertical Landing Angle
  • Flight Time
  • Angle of Attack

Skills Challenge Entertainment

Flightscope Skills Challenges shows a lighter side of the simulator to make golf fun for everyone. While serious players can use it to improve accuracy, shot shaping, and control, it is ideal for the rest of the family to learn the sport.

The versatility of the challenges struck me, and I loved being able to craft my own tests specific to each training session. When I wanted to work on short-game approach shots, I just shortened the targets. Conversely, I increase the distance to hone my skills with long irons and fairway woods.

E6 Bundle

The complete golf simulator experience of the Mevo Plus is powered by the E6 Connect Basic Package. It gives you access to 5 golf courses and 17 driving ranges to play and practice anytime.

The E6 golf courses allow you to play 18 holes from home after work, to retain your course fitness. I did have to calibrate the launch monitor using the Simulator Angle Tool included in the package. Once the angles were sorted, I was ready to play.

When I felt like working on specific aspects of my game, I switched to the driving range to work on different shot shapes. Plus, I had fun practicing certain shots like draws, fades, and punches to enhance my arsenal.

The Mevo + E6 Bundle operates on iOS 13 or Android 6.0 and later, making them accessible to most golfers.

Visuals

Flightscope offers three different angles to watch your ball flight in 3D. The Back view proved the best for me, but I did not mind the Perspective view. However, I had little time for the side view when using the Flightscope application.

Besides the angles, I felt the graphics on the Flightscope applications and E6 Connect were of the highest quality. Obviously, this was aided by the quality of my ultra-high definition (UHD) projector.

Portability

The Mevo + is a compact launch monitor measuring 6.8″ x 1.2″ x 4.6″. Plus, it weighs a single pound, making it easy to carry in your golf bag to the driving range or when you head on vacation.

Works Inside and Outdoors

Whether you are hitting into a net in your back garden, an impact screen indoors, or bombing your driver at the range, the Mevo + works. It carries three modes to optimize usability in all surroundings.

The outdoor feature enables unlimited ball flight and tracks your ball as it launches into the distance. I spent most of the time operating it in an indoor mode, built for larger spaces, where you have 13’ between the mat and impact screen. In addition, it demands 8’ from the sensor to the mat.

Finally, Short Indoor covers chip shots with limited flight, reaching a minimum of 8’ between the net and strike zone is required.

Metallic Dots

Every Mevo + is accompanied by 100 metallic dots to place on your golf balls. Flightscope offers this additional feature to more accurately read speed and spin indoors. If you do not apply these dots to the golf balls, it will return inconsistent results, mostly on high-impact long iron and wood shots.

Floor and Ceiling Space

Flightscope suggests a room that is 10’ wide and 21’ long to cover a full swing and the sensor requirements. You need 13’ from the net to the impact zone and an additional 8’ft behind the mat to set up the Mevo + launch monitor.

In addition, 10’ of ceiling height is required to swing your club freely on full shots. If these specs are too big for any room in your house, you can take it outside or enjoy the simulator experience on the driving range.

What I Like About The Mevo Plus

Affordability

I know the Mevo + is not the cheapest golf equipment item around. However, as far as simulators go, it actually is. For less than $2,000, they give you access to robust and accurate data parameters, indoor and outdoor functionality, and access to virtual golf courses and driving ranges.

In addition, it is equipped with numerous challenges to help you practice with a purpose and take on your buddies.

Indoors or Outdoors

I have spoken at length about the three modes of the Mevo Plus, which allow you to operate the simulator outside and indoors. This enhances the experience and gives you visual insight into each shot on the range for instant feedback.

Data Points

Although some may complain that the Standard Flightscope Mevo has 34 fewer data points than the Pro Package, I find it sufficient, especially for a mid or high-handicapper.

Low handicappers may prefer additional data parameters, but adding them costs an extra $1,000. Still, your overall total is far lower than golf simulators from premium brands.

Compact Design

The compact design of the Flightscope Mevo + launch monitor makes it an easy device to transport between your home and the range. It is only 1 pound which is light enough to carry in your golf bag or backpack while you move from one spot to another.

Flightscope Skills Challenges

Next, the Flightscope Skills Challenges are a brilliant creation that allows you to create your own challenges. This enables you to tailor training sessions to work on specific aspects of your game, for example, straight shots between 100 to 150 yards.

Once you take on the challenges, you can gauge your effectiveness by accumulated points. In addition, I do like the added extra of displaying how far away from my target I was compared to PGA Tour pros.

E6 Bundle

Finally, despite its lower than standard price, the Mevo + gives you access to the E6 Connect Basic Subscription. This allows you to access 5 virtual golf courses and 17 driving ranges to work on your swing mechanics, shot shape, and ball striking.

Fortunately, the E6 software operates on iOS and Android devices, catering to a broader audience of golfers.

What I Dislike About The Mevo Plus

Metallic Dots

Flightscope launch monitors demand metallic dots on each golf ball for indoor use. While I understand their purpose and appreciate their value, it is just an additional step I would rather avoid.

However, there is no additional cost for the metallic dots, as each simulator purchased includes them. When you avoid applying them to your golf ball, the device delivers erratic measurements on full shots.

Price of Additional Data Parameters

I have already mentioned the Pro Package from Flightscope, which is built to measure over 50 data parameters. While this appeals to more serious golfers, it will cost you an additional $1,000 to enjoy these metrics.

The extra $1,000 still renders it more affordable than premium models from its competitors. However, you can almost acquire a new set of irons at that price.

4 Hour Charge

Next, I could live without the 4-hour charging time because I usually forget the battery life after using it. That means when I set it up and realize there is no battery, I need to wait 4 hours. It can push 12 hours if you charge it from your laptop.

Target Alignment

Before hitting, you must calibrate the golf simulator to accurately depict ball flight, shot shape, and data. Every Mevo + contains a Simulation Angle Tool, which helps you align the sensor with the impact zone for optimal results.
